2020 Touriga Reserve
It’s often a winemakers dilemma if and when to produce a varietal reserve wine. In our history I can recount only 1 time. The thought process is this. Is the resulting extra barrel aging in new oak actually resulting in a more complex and better wine? In this case with an additional year in barrel this particular lot improved dramatically with age. Composed of one particular lot of whole cluster Touriga that was left out of the original bottling. The wine shows generous amounts of spice from the stem inclusion and melds very well with its rich dark fruit flavors. On the pallet it's smooth as silk with no bitter dry tannin, it often reminds me of Negrette in that way, silk stockings in a bottle. Great for spring warm days and cooler nights, there are a lot of complex flavors packed in this wine yet it’s not a bit cloying. It’s a great addition to shepherd and cottage pies and smoked meats.
