The Grandmother and The Wine
The Story of Alexandrine
Alexandrine immigrated to the Adelaida area of California in 1911 to marry her first cousin, Alfred Dubost. She helped him the Dubost General store and post office on Adelaida Road. There is a historical marker on the side of the road where the building once stood. She was often thought of as “the Mayor of Adelaida” and we have honored her influence by naming our Rhone white blend after her.
In October of 2017, we were contacted by a woman in London who had found the postcard below in an antique store there. Curious about the postcard itself as well as the sender she began searching the internet.
The front of postcard displayed a picture of the new L.A. Times news room re-built in 1911. The postmark to the left was Adelaida, California, July 24, 1912. Written in French it was from Alexandrine Dubost to her friends in France. ‘The Lady in London’ located us and sent the postcard. We will always be thankful for her diligence.
Passage translated to English:
“Dear Friends.
I got your news today and I am happy to see you are well. I think of times gone by, but do not worry - I am happy here.
I have a big baby of 8 months! I will be going back to see my parents and friends in France when he is big and he can keep me company.
Are you working in your dress making job? You are strong and brave and can make your living no matter what work you do. My dear Marie, I wish you good health and a happy future.
Your Friend - Alex Dubost”
